The name has its origin in the Persian term 'zargun' meaning golden. It is a mineral belonging to the group of nesosilicates. Zircon occurs in a wide range of colours, but for many years the most popular was the colourless variety, which looks like diamond because of its brilliance and dispersion. Zircons powerful luster and intense fire gives it splendor that no other natural gem but diamond can surpass. However, its popularity is diminished by the fact that it is often perceived as an inexpensive diamond imitation. Although diamonds are harder than zircons, they are quite young in comparison: a mere 3.3 billion years old. Zircons of all colors are used as gems, but the colorless, golden-brown, and blue gems are the most popular. Colorless zircon is usually cut with the brilliant cut. This brings out its fire to its fullest capability. It is often used as a cheaper, yet natural alternative to diamond. Zircon is believed to relieve pain and provide the wearer with wisdom, honor and riches.
