Iolite derives its name from the Greek work 'ios' which means violet. This gemstone is called the gemstone of the Vikings and is the gem variety of the mineral cordierite. This gemstone is bluish violet in color, Iolite with prominent blue color tones resembles blue sapphire and in lighter blue violet shades represents the more expensive, tanzanite. Although the color is attractive and popular it is not extremely rare and therefore affordable.
Iolite is believed to be the gemstone of happiness and joy. It is also believed to posses Feng Shui properties that help build relationships with others. Iolite also supports the healing of the eyes, stimulates memory and helps with sleep imbalances.
