September Birthstone - Sapphire

Sapphire is the modern September birthstone and the gem designated for the 5th, 23rd and 45th wedding anniversary. The name "Sapphire" comes from the Persian word "safir", meaning "beloved of Saturn". Ancient Persians called this gem the Celestial Stone, believing that the Earth resided on top of a giant blue sapphire, and that the blue was reflected to create our sky.

Royal blue color is the most popular and valuable color for sapphire, it also occur in other natural colors and tints like orange-pink, golden, white, gray, yellow, green, violet, brown and even black. These different colors are caused by different kinds of impurities within the crystal. The best sapphires hold the brightness of their color under all different types of lighting. Sapphires are found in different shapes like triangles, square, pear shapes, marquises, cushion shape, rounded rectangle and oval shape.
