June Birthstone - Pearl

Pearl is derived from the Latin word "perula," or small pear. Pearl is the only gemstone that is formed within a living creature. Thus pearls are truly a treasured gift of the sea and revered for their colors, shapes, sizes and luster. Pearls are commonly white however they may also be black, gray, silver, cream, lavender or pink depending on the type of mollusk and the water it lives in. The three most common types of pearls are natural, cultured, and baroque. Pearl is the birthstone for the month of June. It is also the accepted gemstone for the 3rd and 30th years of marriage. Pearls have long been regarded as symbols of nobility, representing beauty, modesty and purity. Hence pearl has been cherished throughout history.
